In QM Nov/Dec '01 and Jan/Feb '02 (No.'s 82 and 83), we patterned a charming wall quilt designed by Lynne Hagmeier. We thought our readers might like to make this quilt in a twin comforter size. You'll need both issues plus the information presented here to make this quilt. To order these issues, call 800-477-6089. Outside the U.S., call 303-604-1464.

Yardage is given for the borders, binding and lining only; use scraps to make the blocks.

 Piecing the Blocks

Following the instructions and diagrams in QM No. 82, piece these blocks: 2 star blocks, 8 flower blocks, 8 flag blocks, 8 acorn and leaf blocks, 4 Flying Geese blocks and 4 house blocks. Referring to the cutting box and diagram here and QM No. 82 for the patterns, make 6 star block 2's.

 Adding the Applique

Prepare the applique patches, found in QM No. 83, according to your favorite method. If you plan to applique the traditional way, add the patches before assembling the quilt. For raw edge applique, add patches after the quilting is complete. We don't recommend fusing applique for a bed quilt. If you'd rather not use buttons for the flower centers or stars on the flag, use the applique patches given here instead.

 Assembling the Top

Referring to the assembly diagram, join the blocks to make rows. Press the seam allowances of every other row in the same direction. Join the rows and press these seam allowances all one way.

 Adding the Squared Borders

Sew the border 1 side strips to the quilt. Press the seam allowances toward the strips and trim any extra length. Add the top and bottom border 1 strips; press and trim as before. In the same way add the border 2 and then the border 3 strips.

Go to Step 3 in QM No. 83 and follow the remaining steps to complete your quilt. A sleeve will not be needed.
