Use this alternate quilting motif for Haley's Quilt, which appears in Quiltmaker May/June 2005 (No. 103). If you cannot find this issue at your local quilt shop, order back issues at www.VillageQuiltShoppe.com.

To mark the Heart Chain Quilting in the sashes, begin by folding the quilt in half horizontally and creasing lightly to mark the center of each sash. Align the placement dots in the quilting motif on this center crease and center the heart in the sash by eye. Mark one motif. Continue marking the sash, using the placement dots to align with the next repeat and extending or shortening the links of the motif at the ends, as necessary. Repeat to mark each sash.

Layer the backing, batting and quilt top; baste the layers together.

Meander quilt the blocks. Quilt the motifs in the sashes with two passes; first quilt one half of the chain and the opposite side ot the heart (shown in red on the Quilting Placement diagram), continuing to the end of the sash. Then quilt the other half of the chains and hearts (shown in blue).
