Which Way to Machine Applique?
Zigzag Applique
Strictly a machine technique, the zigzag can be used for both almost-invisible and decorative-edge applique.
A short, narrow zigzag will conceal the stitches; a long and wide zigzag will emphasize them. The needle should pierce the background fabric but hug the edge of the applique patch so the thread lies on the patch. Stitch slowly at corners, holding back the fabric with your hands to position the needle as you would for satin stitching. Pivot for inside and outside curves as shown below.
