 Which Way to Machine Applique?

Satin Stitch Applique

The most durable method of applique, satin stitching boasts a speed and evenness impossible to match by hand. The heavy thread outline emphasizes simple patch shapes but is not well suited to complex, tiny patches.

Adjust the stitch width to make a line that you find attractive. Start with a stitch length slightly more than zero. If the thread builds up, preventing the foot from moving forward, increase the stitch length gradually to get a smooth stitch. If you see a series of zigzag stitches, decrease the length for a more solid line of stitching.

Stitch along the patch edge, covering the raw edge and extending into the background fabric by a thread or two. See the suggestions above for sewing corners.
