 Prize-Winning Tips for Machine Quilting

Batting

Everyone interviewed prefers cotton or cotton blend batting. They mentioned a wide variety of brand names.

Needles and Threads

First choose the thread you want to quilt with and then the needle that will accommodate the thread.
Diane

For 50-weight cotton thread, I use a Microtex 80/12 needle.
Sue

I use a Jeans 80/12 needle for cotton threads and Metallica for metallic thread.
Carolee

I use a 90/14 quilting needle with 40-weight rayon thread. I'm not fussy about needles--if I have trouble with one, I just try another kind.
Ricky

I quilt with very fine thread that allows me to stitch over the same line 2 or 3 times with no obvious build-up. With nylon monofilament or 100-weight silk in the top and 60-weight, 2-ply cotton embroidery thread in the bobbin, I use a 60 Microtex Sharp needle.
Diane

If a decorative metallic thread gives me grief, I wind it onto a bobbin and quilt from the back of the sandwich using cotton or rayon in the top.
Ricky

I change my needle frequently-about every 2 hours of quilting.
Barbara

Not all machines will accept just any needle or thread. You'll need to experiment and read your manual.
