 Teaching Kids to Quilt

By Ronnie O'Connor & Theresa Eisinger

The love of quilts has flourished in recent years, but quiltmakers are still only a small portion of the population. For our families, the way quilting enriches our lives is plain to see, but there are children who have never known anyone to take up a needle just for the love of it.

To introduce young people to the joy and satisfaction that comes from quiltmaking, Quiltmaker artist Theresa Eisinger asked her son's teacher if the class could participate in Quiltmaker's ongoing Comfort Quilts Project, making quilts to be donated to shelters in the Denver, Colorado, area. Amy Green, fourth-grade teacher at Our Lady of Fatima School, was enthusiastic.

During two 2-hour sessions, the kids completed two quilt tops. Theresa could tell that all the students--girls and boys alike--enjoyed their quiltmaking experience very much. They learned several new skills; they were exposed to color, fabric, and design; they had the satisfaction of seeing their projects to completion; and they experienced the good feelings associated with giving comfort to those in need.
