Instructions
For more detailed instructions on each step of the quiltmaking process, see our Basic Lessons.
Illustrations within the pattern include tabs that show which direction seam allowances should be pressed. Border seam allowances are pressed away from the quilt center unless otherwise noted.
Step 1 About This Quilt
For economical use of fabric, for foundation piecing patches 2 and 5, cut the white multiprint in 70 3" squares; then cut the squares in half on the diagonal. For the foundation 3 patches, use 35 4" squares cut in half on the diagonal.
For each block, use 2 foundation patterns and the same bright print for patch 1's and 4's. Each 1/8 yard of a bright print will make 2 blocks. If you prefer a scrappier look, add a wider variety of prints.

Step 2 Making the Top
On an accurate copying machine or by tracing, make 70 copies of the foundation section. In numerical order, foundation piece the sections, trimming and pressing after each patch addition. Make the X and O blocks by joining the sections.
Sew the blocks together as shown to make the row 1's and 2's. Remove the foundation papers. Alternating types, join the rows.
Sew the border 1 side strips to the quilt. After pressing, trim any extra length. Add the border 1 top and bottom strips in the same way. Repeat to add the border 2 strips.

Step 3 Quilting and Finishing
Slightly stretch the lining right side down on a flat surface and tape or pin in place. Center the batting and quilt top over the lining and pin or baste the layers together.
Quilt the blocks and borders in the ditch. Quilt lines in the X's and O's where shown. Quilt a line through the center of border 2.
Join the binding strips and sew them to the quilt to enclose the edges. If you would like to display your quilt on a wall, add a sleeve to the lining.
