QM Patterns: Little Mittens

 Instructions

Step 1 Choosing Fabrics

We selected bright fabrics to warm the spirits. For each mitten, pick two fabrics of the same color, a dark for the hand and a lighter one for the cuff.

Step 2 Appliqueing the Mittens

Each pair of mittens is connected with a bias strip "string." Cut a bias strip from each fat quarter; then prepare the bias strips and B-Dr patches using your preferred method.

Using the assembly diagram as your guide, center by eye the B's, Br's and C's and blindstitch to A in alphabetical order. Leave a 1" opening at the bottom of the cuff of each pair of mittens to insert the end of the string. Likewise, position and applique D/Dr's on all but 4 E patches. Centering the applique, trim A and E patches as indicated in the yardage box.

Step 3 Assembling the Quilt Top

Make the rows and press seam allowances toward the F patches. Sew the rows together, and then press the seam allowances as shown.

Matching each bias strip to a mitten pair, loop the strings in the plain E's and tuck ends into the openings of the cuffs. Trim the lengths as needed. Blindstitch the strings in place, and then blindstitch the openings closed.
