Hopes and Wishes
A Mystery Quilt in Patchwork
Part 1

 Getting Ready for Construction

First cut the border strips and binding from the dark blue fabric. Then, following dimensions given with the diagrammed rotary-cut patches, cut all the patches listed.

As with all patchwork, using an accurate 1/4" seam allowance for piecing is very important. For help in establishing this measurement on your sewing machine, follow the Machine Piecing hints given below.

 Making the Unit 1's

With 2 [2] light blue A's and 2 [2] dark blue A's, make 4 [4] unit 1's as follows:

With right sides together and the light blue on top, pair 1 light blue and 1 dark blue A. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner as shown.

Stitch 1/4" out from both sides of the line.

To trim the seam allowance points, fold the stitched squares along the marked line. At the end of the stitching on both sides, clip the points perpendicular to the raw edges. Cut apart on the marked line.

With the darker fabric up, open out the top patch and press the unit.

Each pair of A patches will yield 2 units.

Label and set aside these unit 1's for later use.
