This Posies in the Park pattern originally debuted in QM Spring/Summer '82 (No. 1) and featured strip piecing. This version replicates the original, a classic worth visiting again.

See Basic Lessons for more detailed information on quiltmaking.

Directions are for both the long twin comforter and the crib/wall quilt. Information specific to the crib/wall size is given in [ ].

 Getting Started

The same bright pastel print fabric was used for 4 A patches within a Y block but you could vary them for a scrappier look.

 Making the Top

Referring to the diagram, assemble the Y blocks and press the seam allowances as shown.

Sew the strips together to make the bands. Press seam allowances as shown. Cut the bands to make the Z blocks.

Band Aide

When cutting a band into blocks, square up the starting edge. As you cut your blocks, square off the band again as needed so that the cut edges will remain perpendicular to the seams.

Referring to the diagrams, join the blocks, noting their orientations, to make the row 1's and 2's. Press the seam allowances as shown. Alternating types, join the rows. Press all these seam allowances in one direction.

Sew the border 1 side strips to the quilt. Press the seam allowances toward the strips and trim any extra length. Add the border 1 top and bottom strips in the same way. Repeat for the border 2 strips.

 Quilting and Finishing

Download the PDF file and print the Pretty Posies Quilting motifs. Referring to the quilting placement diagram, mark the Pretty Posies Quilting, centering the flower portion of the motif over the Y blocks. Mark the leaf motifs in the Z blocks, extending them into border 1 as shown. Beginning in the corners and working toward the centers, mark the leaves in border 2. If necessary, adjust the motif in the center of each side to fit.

Layer the lining wrong side up and add the batting and quilt top. Baste the layers together.

Quilt the marked motifs, following the arrows for continuous-line machine quilting. Quilt the motifs in the outer border last.

Join the binding strips and enclose the edges of the quilt. [Add a sleeve to the lining by hand.]

 Shortstop Stripes

These striped and plaid fabrics give a masculine look to this quilt. Stripes turned to run the width of the borders can add interest.
