Completing Your Quilt

 Choosing Your Fabrics

You can make this quilt inexpensively by using scraps. Choose four colors that contrast well with each other. A collection of light multiprints will work for the A patches, and groups of dark, medium and light scraps for the Z blocks.

Click on the "Yardages" link at left for yardage information for one or four quilts.

 Making the Quilt Top

Using either strip piecing or traditional patchwork (see below for a strip piecing shortcut), follow the diagrams to make the Z blocks. Press the seam allowances as shown.

Using the assembly diagram (see link below right): Join the A patches and Z blocks to make the rows and press the seam allowances toward the A's. Join the rows as shown.

Rotary Cutting

Block Z Make 31

 Strip-Piecing Shortcut

Cut 6 strips 2" x 40" from each of the red and blue prints. From the yellow print, cut 6 strips 3" x 40". Make 6 bands and cut as shown.

 Completing Your Quilt

Layer the lining, batting and quilt top. Baste the layers together.

Quilt in the ditch the A patches and Z blocks and quilt diagonal lines through the A's. Tack or tie the center of each Z block.

For a faster method of securing the layers, omit the quilting and tie the center of each A patch and Z block. Make an additional tie at each intersection of the A patches and Z blocks. Or check our "Quilts Fit To Be Tied" tips on our Tips & Techniques page for helpful guidelines on making quick continuous ties or machine tacks.

Enclose the edges with binding.
