Stars of the Improv is a crib-size series quilt that you can make at your leisure as the improvisational construction techniques are featured in the May/June (No. 85) and Sept/Oct (No. 87) issues of Quiltmaker. The directions for this quilt are given only on our web site but, as mentioned, you'll need these copies of the magazine for reference. To order these issues of Quiltmaker magazine as they become back issues, call 800-477-6089. (Outside the U.S. call 303-604-1464.)

For help with all phases of the quiltmaking process, see Basic Lessons.

See Part 1 on the web site for the pattern schedule, yardage and cutting, and the patches needed for this crib quilt. See Part 2 to make the Spinning Star blocks.

Directions for the "Slapplique" technique given in Quiltmaker Jan/Feb 2002 (No. 83) are republished here for making this block.

Part Three of Five: Four Hearts Blocks

Four hearts decorate each of the seven Hearts blocks in our Stars of the Improv series quilt. Stitch 'em up quick with the Slappique technique highlighted in the July/August 2002 (#86) issue of Quiltmaker magazine.

Step 1: Stitching the Hearts
Read the "Slapplique" technique shown below. The hearts (B patches) for this pattern need no turn-under preparation as they will be stitched down with raw edges showing.

Pair hearts and A's to get optimum contrast between prints. Center a heart on an A patch. With thread that complements the heart patch, topstitch each B on an A. Clip each heart's indentation about 1/8" into the seam allowance. Make a total of 28 A/B units.

Step 2: Making the Blocks
Combine groups of 4 A/B units for pleasing distributions of color. Make 7 blocks.

If you like the look of homespuns and don't like the fuss of preparing turned edges, try this casual method.

For applique, choose shapes with gentle curves rather than sharp points and deep indentations--or adapt applique by enlarging small shapes, softening angles and making points blunt. Think big and round.

Loosely woven fabrics have the best fringe benefits for this technique; homespuns and flannels are good choices. Cut patches without adding turn-under allowance. For stems, cut bias strips 1/2"-3/4" wide.

Casually slap patches in position and topstitch about 1/4" inside each patch. The stitching will show, so select thread colors carefully. Complete your quilt top; then quilt and bind as usual.

Gently launder your finished quilt and then tumble in the dryer for just a few minutes to encourage disheveled fringed edges.
