Stars of the Improv is a crib-size series quilt that you can make at your leisure as the improvisational construction techniques are featured in the May/June (No. 85) and Sept/Oct (No. 87) issues of Quiltmaker. The directions for this quilt are given only on our web site but, as mentioned, you'll need these copies of the magazine for reference. To order these issues of Quiltmaker magazine as they become back issues, call 800-477-6089. (Outside the U.S. call 303-604-1464.)

See Part 1 for the pattern schedule, yardage and cutting, and the patches needed for this crib quilt.

For more detailed instructions on each step of the quiltmaking process, see our Basic Lessons.

Part Two of Five: Spinning Stars Blocks

The May/June 2002 (#85) issue of Quiltmaker magazine is needed for technique directions to make this block.

Step 1: Making the Foundations
By tracing or on an accurate photocopy machine make 24 copies of the foundation pattern (shown below). In numerical order, foundation piece 12 sections using the yellow print for the star and the medium blue print for the background. Make 12 more with the yellow print and the dark blue print.

Pattern cut size is 5" x 5".

Print out the PDF file for accurate size. Click here to download the PDF file for this foundation pattern. Note: Please check your printing options to ensure that the file will print at actual size. In Acrobat version 4.0 and earlier, check Page Setup under the File menu and de-select the Fit to Print option. In Acrobat 5.0, deselect the shrink/enlarge page options under the Copies and Pages -- Acrobat option, available in the File -- Print menu.

Join sections as shown in the block piecing diagram to make 6 blocks. Remove the foundation papers.

Step 2: Creating the Tilted Stars
Cut the see-through template plastic to 6 1/2" x 6 1/2". Mark the seam line 1/4" in from the edge all around. Following the "Tilt 'n Trim" directions on page 19 of QM May/June '02 (No. 85), cut 6 tilted stars from the star blocks. Set these aside for later assembly.
