Block Window

Using Your Calendar Holder

The top section, with its folded-fabric frame and flannel lining, is the perfect window for displaying 12 1/2" unfinished quilt blocks. The lower pocket easily holds a 12"-wide purchased calendar.

Our Seasons and Celebrations mini foundation-pieced blocks are perfect for this project! Click here for details.

 Pattern Diagrams

Use these guides for cutting pieces A through E.

 Making the Block Window

Draw a pencil line across the A patch 13 1/2" from the top edge. With the nap side up, lay the flannel B patch on A and align the raw edges at the top of A.

Wrong sides together, fold each C patch in half lengthwise and press.

Overlapping at corners, pin the C's to the top and sides of B with raw edges aligned. Pin the remaining C to B, aligning the raw edge along the pencil line as shown. Baste 1/8" from the raw edges of the C's.

To enclose the raw edges at the pencil line, fold A on the line. Stitch through all layers 1/4" from the fold. Open A and press the edge casing down.

 Adding the Pocket

With the 13 1/2" edges aligned, fuse the interfacing D patch to the wrong side of E following the manufacturer's directions.

Wrong sides together, fold E to make a 13 1/2"x 12 1/4" pocket. Matching the raw edges, baste E to A along the sides and bottom edge.

 Finishing the Construction

Join the binding strips end to end. Covering all basting lines, sew the binding to the edges using a 1/4" seam.

Make a 2" sleeve. Sew to the canvas backing along the top edge.

 Using Your Calendar Holder

Center an unfinished 12 1/2" block in the framed section with seam allowances against the flannel. Pat it smooth and tuck the raw edges into the frame.

The pocket will accommodate calendar pages as large as 12" x 12". Slip the top half of the calendar down into the pocket. You may want to add more stability by inserting a 12" x 12" piece of heavy cardboard into the pocket as well.
