QM Patterns: Single Scoop

 Instructions

See complete quiltmaking instructions, including foundation piecing, see Basic Lessons.

Illustrations within the pattern include tabs that show which direction seam allowances should be pressed. Press border seam allowances away from the quilt center.

Step 1 About This Quilt

In our quilt every scoop of ice cream is a different flavor–what a delicious way to use scraps! Select a nondirectional print for the background patches, making sure the ice cream scoop, the cone and the background have good contrast.

Step 2 Making the Top

Make 13 paper copies of the ice cream cone foundation. In numerical order, foundation piece the block, trimming and pressing after each patch addition. Repeat to make 13 blocks.

Following the assembly diagram, join the blocks and A patches to make the row 1's and row 2's. Remove the foundation papers. Starting with row 1 and alternating with row 2, sew the rows together.

Sew the side border strips to the quilt. After pressing, trim any extra length. Repeat to add the top and bottom strips.

Step 3 Quilting and Finishing

Mark diagonal lines through the A's and cone backgrounds as shown. Layer and baste together the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt the blocks and A's in the ditch. Quilt around the ice cream and the cones. Quilt the marked lines. Quilt lines 1" apart in the border.

Bind the quilt. Wipe up any melted ice cream.
