QM Patterns: Azteca

 Timesaving Triangles

This timesaving technique is perfect for patterns with many identical half-square triangle units. Here's how you can piece 40 at one time. Make 3 sets to get enough units for the sofa quilt. You'll need to make 4 sets for the double comforter.

Layer the light gold print and the gold solid fabrics right sides together. Press. Draw a 15 1/2" x 19 3/8" rectangle on the light gold.

Cutting through both layers, cut out the rectangle. Draw horizontal and vertical lines 3 7/8" apart to make a 4 x 5 grid.

Starting at the upper left, draw a continuous diagonal line through all the squares, following the arrows and pivoting as shown.

Starting in the same corner, draw continuous 1/4" seam lines on both sides of the line. Sew each seam line as it was drawn.

With a rotary cutter, cut on all horizontal and vertical lines and on the diagonal line between seams. Press patches open with the seam allowances toward the gold solid.
