You Can't Go Wrong

Homesewer Carla Kilkelly says using fabric with no right or wrong sides for the B/Br and D/Dr patches makes piecing a snap!

Directions are for both the sofa quilt and the long double comforter. Information that differs for the double comforter is given in [ ].

For help with all phases of the quiltmaking process, see Basic Lessons.

Step 1 Making the Blocks

The quilt has 100 [150] half-square triangle units made with light gold print and gold solid. See Timesaving Triangles for an easy grid method of constructing these units. More yardage is needed for the sofa quilt when using this method but the sewing is quick and accurate. You will also have 20 [10] units left over for your next scrap quilt.

Follow the block piecing diagrams to piece 10 [15] Y blocks and 10 [15] Z blocks. Press the seam allowances as shown.

Step 2 Assembling the Quilt Top

To make the rows, join Y blocks, Z blocks and F patches in the order shown in the assembly diagram below. Make 3 [3] row 1's and 2 [3] row 2's. Press the seam allowances toward the F's.

To align the blocks from row to row when adding the long sashes, sew a sash to the bottom of the block row. Pin to mark the sash at the seam lines of the blocks and F's (fig. 2a). Match the seam lines with the pins when adding the next row (fig. 2b).

Join the rows and sashes in the order shown. Press the seam allowances toward the sashes.
