"Not long ago, I was offered a quilt made during Lincoln's 1864 reelection campaign, but something about it just didn't seem right. The eagle over the bars struck me as too sophisticated for the era. An expert in political textiles confirmed that it was, in fact, counterfeit. With hopes that publicity would inhibit this sort of fraud, I patterned Union Star from that quilt for all to use."
--Barbara Brackman

Barbara is a renown quilt historian, author, teacher and designer who lives in Lawrence, Kansas. She was recently inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame.

This quilt pattern appears in the July/August 2004 (#98) issue of Quiltmaker magazine. Visit www.villagequiltshoppe.com to check for back issue availability.

This quilt is also featured in Civil War Women, by Barbara Brackman, C&T Publishing, 2000. For more information about authentic quilts of the era, including designs and patterns by Terry Clothier Thompson, look for Quilts from the Civil War, also by Barbara Brackman, C&T Publishing, 1997.
