Have you been looking for an easy foundation-piecing block to use for your scraps? This is it--and it's also perfect to teach a friend foundation piecing. For more detailed instructions on each step of the quiltmaking process, see our Basic Lessons.
Directions
Make one copy of the paper foundation for each heart block you wish to make. (To print out the foundation pattern, click on the Foundation Patterns link at left. The quilt pattern presented in QM Jan/Feb '01 (No. 77) requires 10 heart blocks.
For each block, use light scraps for the background patches and a contrasting fabric for the heart. Following numerical order, foundation piece the block. Trim away excess fabric and paper along the outer lines. Do not yet remove the paper from the block.
Sew together the heart blocks with plain blocks or join rows of heart blocks for a cute crib quilt. See the January/February 2001 issue of Quiltmaker for our Hearts for Linus version of a finished quilt.
