The String Section
String piecing uses strips or "strings" of fabric that are sewn onto a foundation. Originally developed for utility quilts, quiltmakers used whatever leftover fabrics they had on hand in keeping with their tradition of thrift.
Cut your fabrics into strips from selvedge to selvedge in 1"--3" widths. Don't worry about cutting them to length--trim them after they have been sewn to the foundation to save fabric.
Place the first strip right side up diagonally across the foundation as shown. Put a second strip on top of the first, right sides facing. Pin in place and sew together. Trim the strings to leave a 1/4" seam allowance. Open the top string and press. Cut away the extra length and set the remaining pieces aside to use again. As you sew the strips in place, vary the angles of their placement.
Trim the seam allowance and press open after each strip is added. Working outward in both directions, add strips to cover the foundation square (6-9 depending on their width). Finally, trim the edges of the strips even with the edges of the foundation.
