QM Patterns: String Quartet

 Instructions

Directions are for both the wide twin/double comforter and the king comforter. Information that differs for the king size is given in [ ].

Step 1 Choosing Fabrics

The construction of the blocks in String Quartet is very simple and random placement of assorted scraps would guarantee fast and easy quiltmaking.

The Quiltmaker staff, however, took up the challenge of selecting fabrics that demonstrate a progression of cool red-purples to warm red-oranges and pale sky blues to dark navy blues as you read the blocks from left to right, top to bottom. If you'd like to recreate this quilt, refer to the full quilt photo to "orchestrate" your fabric placement.

Step 2 Making the Blocks

Following directions in The String Section, string piece 4 foundation squares. Orient the squares as shown and join with the A and B patches to make a block. Press as shown. Make 20 [25] blocks, building your color progression.

Step 3 Making and Joining the Rows

Sew 4 [5] blocks and 3 [4] C's together to make a row. Press the seam allowances toward the C's. Make 5 [5] rows.

To align the blocks from row to row when adding the sashes: First, sew a sash to a row. Pin the sash to mark the seam lines of the blocks and C's (fig. 3a).

Match the block and C seam lines with the pins when joining the next row (fig. 3b). Repeat for the remaining rows and sashes. Trim excess sash length. Press seam allowances toward the sashes.
