Interview with Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins
Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins are two friends who put their applique interest to work! Read how they started their quiltmaking careers, and learn applique secrets from these experts in the July/August 2002 (#86) issue of Quiltmaker magazine.
Following are excerpts from a recent Quiltmaker interview.
How did you decide to make quiltmaking a career? What led you in that direction?
Linda and I met at the Green Country Quilters Guild. We worked together in the guild and became very good friends. We both are drawn to the same kinds of quilts and we both love applique.
My background is in graphics. I have a degree in interior design. Over the years I have taken many art classes. Linda's background is in business. She had owned a beauty shop for 20 years before I met her.
When Linda moved from Tulsa to Colorado, I drew an original block for her going away quilt - that is where Piece O' Cake started! I moved to Texas at about the same time. So, while we used to live in the same place, we've been in different states since starting the business.
Linda and I both make quilts. When I draw a design for Linda, I am the "human pencil." I draw the design that she describes to me. When I draw for myself, Linda offers input. Sometimes we make a quilt together, but more often we each make the quilts we are interested in.
The question "How did you make quiltmaking a career?" makes it sound like all we do is make quilts. That is the best part of what we do, but there is a lot of other work involved. Piece O' Cake has grown from that first pattern into many patterns and books and it takes a lot of energy to make that happen. Linda and I both put in long hours in the not so fun parts of the business. She is in the office most days and I spend much of my time in front of the computer. But being able to be creative, being able to make quilts, makes the "work" part of the business more fun.
