Interview with Pam Clarke
Quilting has been an important part of Pam Clarke's life for over 30 years. Her Designs with Lines machine quilting technique speeds up marking quilt tops, using simple lines as a guide to create individual designs. How did you decide to make quiltmaking a career? What led you in that direction?
I have always loved sewing, but about 33 years ago I saw a quilt and fell in love with quilting. My Grandmother made quilts, but there are so many grandchildren in our family that I knew that I would never receive one from her. So, I decided to start my own tradition and make one for each of my family members (niece nephews, etc.)
What inspires your work? How do new ideas come to you in quiltmaking?
I always try to keep up with the newest books and patterns. I'm very lucky to be able to quilt for Debbie Mumm, Mary Lou Weidman, Retta Warehime, Martingale and many more that have been featured in quilt magazines like Quiltmaker, so this keeps me up with the newest fabrics and techniques. I love to teach quilting and get lots of ideas from my students that let me know what they would like to see in future classes. I'm also a featured quilter on Quilt Central and Linda Taylor's PBS Long Arm shows and this forces me to come up with new ideas to share with the TV viewers.
